Is It Time for a New Winter Pool Cover?

A winter pool cover
A good winter pool cover does more than just keep leaves out. It protects your pool investment through months of harsh winter weather. But like any pool equipment, covers wear out over time. The question is: how do you know when it’s time to replace yours? If you’ve had the same pool cover for years, don’t wait until you’re halfway through fall to take a closer look. Spotting trouble early can save you from unexpected problems next spring and prevent unnecessary damage to your pool. Here are a few signs it might be time for a new winter pool cover before closing season begins.

Fabric Breakdown and Brittleness

If your cover feels stiff, brittle, or has started to crack when you fold it, that’s a clear sign of aging material. Over time, sun exposure and weather extremes wear down the fabric. Once the material starts to break apart, it loses its strength and can’t support the weight of snow or debris. Covers that feel chalky or flake when handled are also showing signs of UV degradation. These covers are more likely to tear or fail under pressure, and replacement is usually the safest option.

Tears, Holes, or Weak Spots

Small holes or tears may seem harmless, but they can quickly grow into larger issues. Even one compromised section can create a safety hazard. Look for frayed stitching, thinning fabric, or areas where the material has started to separate at the seams. For pool safety covers, integrity is everything. A torn or weak spot in the center can cause the entire system to sag, making the cover unsafe and ineffective.

Sagging or Loss of Tension

A safety cover should lie flat and tight across your pool. If the material no longer pulls taut, despite proper tensioning, it may have stretched beyond the point of function. Stretching often happens slowly over years of use and usually indicates the fabric has lost its original strength. This is especially noticeable in large inground pool safety covers, where an even fit is key. If you’ve tightened the springs and anchors but the cover still dips or sags in the middle, the issue is likely with the cover itself.

Outdated or Ill-Fitting Covers

Covers that were never properly fit to your pool should also be replaced. A loose or poorly sized pool cover for winter may not stay in place during wind or storms, leaving gaps where debris or animals can enter. If your setup has changed or your current cover never quite fit right, a properly measured replacement can make all the difference, both in performance and peace of mind.

What About the Hardware?

Springs, buckles, anchors, and straps can wear out, but that doesn’t always mean the entire cover needs to go. These components can often be replaced separately. If your hardware is rusted or worn but the cover itself is still in solid shape, replacing the hardware is usually all that’s needed.
